Chapter Eleven

Mel sent the photos to James via text and hurriedly dressed in her shorts, tank top and high heels. A quick blast from the built-in blow-dryer got her hair halfway dry before she pulled it back and wove it into a French braid down her back.

Fifteen minutes after James had left her room wearing nothing but a towel, Mel was ready for work. She grabbed her truck keys and purse and headed down the stairwell.

Part of her wanted to knock on James’s door and take up where they’d left off. The dedicated agent and lifelong friend in her wouldn’t let her dally any longer. She had to get to the bar and salvage what was left of the night for investigation.

After hopping into her truck, she headed for the Shoot the Bull Bar. The parking lot was packed and she could already imagine how mad Eli was she hadn’t shown up on time for work. She parked in the back of the building and entered through the rear door.

Cora Leigh was hefting a box full of Jack Daniel’s whiskey into her arms from a stack against the wall. “Thank God. I thought you were going to be a no-show. Here.” She shoved the box into Mel’s hands. “Get that out to Eli. He’s all out of whiskey and hollerin’ for tequila.” Cora Leigh lifted another box and followed Mel into the bar.

Mel laid the case of whiskey on the floor at the bar owner’s feet.

“’Bout time you showed up,” Eli grumbled. “Table five needs this tray. Hustle up.” He shoved the tray full of longnecks toward her, the bottles teetering precariously before they settled.

Melissa wove through the tables to get to number five, where SEALs from SBT-22 sat around in a big circle, making it difficult for her to reach the actual table. She stood back and handed the bottles to the individuals instead of setting them on the table.

“Hey, sweetheart.” The man she’d identified as Duff from the previous night lumbered to his feet and swung her into his arms. “Come dance with me. Cowboy isn’t here tonight. You got to be feelin’ lonely.”

With the big round tray braced in front of her, she managed to keep from being squashed in the SEAL’s embrace. “I’m working.”

“Didn’t keep you from kissing Cowboy last night.” The man gave her a sad-puppy look. “Aw, come on. Just one dance.”

“Maybe later, big guy. I just got to work and my boss is giving me the stink-eye.” Melissa nodded toward Eli, who at that moment was glaring her way.

Duff sighed heavily. “Okay, but I’ll take you at your word. I expect a dance.”

Melissa went back to work, serving shooters and mugs of beer to the thirsty SEALs until there was a lull in the orders and she was able to keep her word.

Dancing would be a good way to get to know the members of the Pit Viper team in a fairly safe environment. She wouldn’t have to be alone with anyone and she could still ask questions to get to know them.
